Competitive Landscape

The Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro) is the biggest competitor on the market, but it has failed to gain traction during its existence. On average, only 800 Boston Kpro implantations are performed each year and that number has been declining since the early 2010s. The Auro KPro uses the same Boston KPro design, but it is made by Indian manufacturers. Both of these devices require a corneal carrier for implantation. Although a patient’s diseased cornea may be used, in most cases a donor cornea is required. AlphaCor™ and KeraKlear are two other artificial corneas in development that have not been successful enough for commercial sale.
